Claude for Business: The Skill Stack That Ends AI Slop
One brand voice skill was never going to be enough.
You installed it, loaded it with your tone words and your banned list, and Claude still slid an em dash into the closing line of a draft that started strong enough that you almost didn't check.

When enforcement lived in one skill, it slipped on every third draft: slop in the final line, formatting reverting to bulleted lists no one asked for.
The sign-offs went generic right when the piece mattered. Splitting the job into layers is what fixed it. This post walks through the five-layer stack I run now, what each layer catches that the others miss, and the fifteen-minute edit that makes the whole thing load itself.
The short version: voice enforcement is four different jobs.
What you sound like, the mechanics underneath the sound, the compliance check before anything ships, and the format-specific moves each platform needs. A single skill carrying all four drops at least one on every draft. Five layers, each scoped to one job, hold.
Why Isn't One Brand Voice Skill Enough?
A brand voice skill holds tone and vocabulary. Voice enforcement also needs rhythm mechanics, a delivery gate, and format moves it can't carry alone.
The failure is structural, and it starts with how skills get read. A monolithic voice skill grows every time you catch a new pattern, and the longer it gets, the more Claude treats it like vibes: the memorable rules stick, the mechanical ones drop, and the drift is back by message five.
The jobs are also different kinds of work.
Vocabulary is a lookup. Rhythm has to hold across a whole draft, and compliance is a literal count that either hits zero or doesn't. Ask one skill to do all of it and it does the loudest parts.
A skill written to describe your voice shapes what Claude generates, and nothing in it audits what came out, which is how you end up screaming I SAID NO EM DASHES into the void at 4pm on a Tuesday.
What Is the Voice Enforcement Stack?
The voice enforcement stack is five skill layers: brand voice, editing patterns, a final scrub gate, format-specific skills, and pair-loading.
Top to bottom:
Brand voice skill. The what of your voice. Always loads on writing tasks.
Editing patterns skill. The mechanics under the voice. Always loads, paired with brand voice.
Final scrub skill. The delivery gate. Runs last, before anything streams.
Format-specific skills. Carousel, Threads chain, email, blog. Load only when the format matches.
Pair-loading. Skill descriptions that name their partners so the layers arrive together.
Each layer exists because the one above it has a blind spot.
What Does Each Layer Actually Do?
Layers one and two shape generation, layer three audits output, layer four adds format moves, and layer five wires everything to load together.
Layer 1: The Brand Voice Skill
The what. Tone, vocabulary, the patterns that make writing recognizable as yours. Mine holds fifteen named voice moves with annotated examples pulled from real posts, the audience names I use, and the coach-speak I never touch. It loads on every writing task, no exceptions.
Its limit: it describes what your voice sounds like, and description alone doesn't stop the model's defaults from leaking back in around the edges, usually in the final line, right where your attention already left.
Layer 2: The Editing Patterns Skill
The mechanics. Rhythm rules, punctuation preferences, sentence-opener bans, capitalization defaults.
Vocabulary bans are the easy part of voice enforcement, because rhythm is where AI writing gives itself away: stacked staccato sentences, paragraphs that all share one shape.
Mine bans three short sentences in a row and holds the em dash count at a flat zero, among a dozen other mechanical checks. It loads alongside the brand voice skill every time, because the sound and the mechanics under the sound are separate jobs that ship together.
Layer 3: The Final Scrub Skill
The delivery gate. This one runs literal string matches against the ban list: em dashes, banned AI vocabulary, sycophancy openers, every phrasing in my past-mistakes ledger.
It runs before the draft streams, and it rewrites silently until the count hits zero.
The first two layers are constraints on generation. This layer is an audit on output, and the difference matters because the two fail in different ways. A model can hold your voice for 800 words and still go full customer-service in the sign-off. The scrub exists for that line.
Layer 4: Format-Specific Skills
Instagram carousel, Threads chain, email copywriter, blog writer. Each loads only when the format matches the request, and each layers on top of the always-load pair, so the format-specific voice moves fire alongside the universal ones.
My blog skill enforces answer capsules and question-formatted headers.
My Threads skill knows chain pacing.
None of them re-teach voice, because they inherit it from the layers underneath, which keeps every skill small and keeps instructions from fighting each other over whose rule wins.
Layer 5: Pair-Loading
The wiring. Claude reads skill descriptions when it decides what to load, so the description is where the stack gets assembled.
Mine name their partners outright: "Always load alongside brand-voice and editing-patterns." "Load for carousel requests only, never for single-image posts."
Once the pairings live in the descriptions, the layers arrive together on every request without you invoking a thing, and the stack stops depending on your memory, which, if your memory is anything like mine, was the weakest layer all along.
Which Layer Is Your Setup Missing?
Each failure points at one layer. Slop in final drafts means no scrub gate, and a voice that holds on Threads but dies in email means no format skill.
The useful part of thinking in layers is diagnosis. When a draft comes back wrong, the kind of wrong tells you which layer to build next, so you're never guessing at what to fix.

Two of these deserve a closer look, because they get misdiagnosed constantly.
Output that sounds like a competent stranger is a description problem, and people try to fix it by adding more banned words to a list.
Rhythm that reads robotic is a mechanics problem, and people try to fix it by rewriting the voice description for the fifth time. Neither fix works, because the fix lives in a different layer than the one being edited.
How Do You Build the Stack on a Low-Capacity Day?
Start with the delivery gate. One scrub skill catches the worst slop today, and the other layers can be added one at a time as capacity allows.
You don't need to build all five layers in a weekend, and if your capacity runs variable like mine does, you shouldn't try.
The low-capacity path: install a scrub layer first. A delivery gate alone catches the em dashes and the AI-coded vocabulary, which covers most of what makes a draft unusable, and it works before any other layer exists. Then add layers one at a time in whatever order matches what bugs you most. Editing patterns next if rhythm is your tell. A format skill next if one platform carries your business.
The higher-capacity path: one sitting, roughly an hour. Pull up every skill in your setup, split anything monolithic into a voice skill and a mechanics skill, then rewrite every description with its load condition and its partners named. That last part is the fifteen minutes doing most of the work.
The Fifteen-Minute Edit
Fifteen minutes rewriting your skill descriptions to name their pairings and their load conditions is the highest-ROI edit available in a Claude setup. You build nothing new. The voice work you already did starts holding, because five scoped layers carry what one overloaded skill kept dropping.
